● SK picglobal’s Ulsan plant has achieved the ZWTL Gold level validated by UL, a global certification agency, by recycling 99% of waste.

SK picglobal, a chemical business subsidiary invested by SKC (CEO & President Woncheol Park) achieved Zero Waste to Landfill certification validated by UL (Underwriters Laboratory), a global safety certification company. Two of SKC-invested subsidiaries are now ZWLT certified, SK nexilis and SK picglobal.

SK picglobal’s Ulsan plant recently achieved the ZWTL Gold level validated by UL. The Gold level means that a company is recycling over 95% of the entire waste and is the second highest level after the Platinum level (100% recycling). The annual waste recycling rate of SK picglobal’s Ulsan plant reaches about 99%.

SK picglobal recycles byproducts generated from the wastewater treatment process and uses them as fertilizer. It also reuses sodium carbonate discharged from the process for _ meta_l refining in other business sites. In addition, it raised the recycling rate for domestic waste generated from offices and restaurants by improving separate waste discharge facilities and improving employees’ awareness of strict waste separation.

The company is further seeking measures to recycle waste synthetic resin as auxiliary fuel and dust waste for raw material extraction. Additional Zero Waste Land Fill strategies are also pursued such as minimizing landfill or incineration arrangements for various types of waste to achieve the ZWTL Platinum level.

ZWTL certification is accepted as an international standard for reduced landfilling of workplace waste. Only few global companies such as SK hynix, Samsung Electronics, and BASF have achieved the certification so far. Among SKC-invested subsidiaries, SK nexilis’ Jeongeup plant was the first in the domestic rechargeable battery industry to achieve the ZWTL Gold level last year. 

SKC plans to take the ZWTL certification of SK picglobal as an opportunity to put even more effort to raise the waste recycling rate. In addition to expanding recycling at individual business sites, the company is making efforts to resolve environmental problems caused by waste by launching a waste plastic recycling project which involves pyrolysis of waste plastic collected in South Korea and turning it into the oil.
