SKC develops world-class, high-efficiency, heat-radiating sheet
2012-06-26
Creation of sheets with in-house technology; new products will likely play a key role in addressing heat generation in electronic devices, including mobile phones

Ÿ Firm targets 15% of global heat-radiating film market - 100 billion won in sales by 2015

SKC (CEO Park Jang-seok) said it has developed a high-efficiency heat-radiating sheet that will address heat generation in electronic appliances, including mobile phones and LCD TVs, and will start mass production in earnest. Heat generation is the main cause for the breakdown or malfunction of electronic devices. This technology will be applied to heat sources, including mobile phone batteries, as the sheet functions to radiate heat.

World-class inorganic material developed

The new heat-radiating sheet is a product that adopts highly enriched carbon nanotubes (CNT), which analysts say is world-class in terms of its orientation of heat radiation and efficiency. Conventional products are capable of radiating heat horizontally, but SKC’s product can radiate heat both horizontally and vertically and is on par with world-class products in terms of heat-radiation efficiency. By banking on these strengths, SKC will supply products in a timely and fashion to target the market. Notably, CNT, the core material for SKC’s product, was difficult to evenly disperse due to its highly cohesive nature, but SKC successfully dispersed highly enriched CNT to twice the normal level.

Targeting 15 % of global market, 100 billion won in sales by 2015

CEO Park Jang-seok said, “SKC’s heat-radiation sheet has resulted from fusion technology that integrates CNT dispersion technology and conventional film technology. SKC will make more aggressive investments in the development of organic materials and technology conversion in order to beef up our capacity in the development of high valued-added products.” He added, “We aim to achieve 100 billion won in sales and control a 15 percent share of the world market, with only our heat-radiation sheets, by 2015,” in announcing the company’s goal. The heat radiation sheet is used in LCD/LCD TVs, mobile devices, including mobile phones, and LED lighting. The product is projected to a market worth 400 billion won this year and 700 billion won in 2015. Notably, as LED is being used in TVs and for indoor lighting, the heat-radiating sheet market for LED products is expected to grow by more than 20 percent per year.

Currently, U.S. companies are dominating the global heat radiation sheet market. The introduction of SKC’s product will not only enable Korea to substitute imports for domestic demand but will also allow the company to offer a closer customer supply service to global enterprises, as well as enabling the company to develop more diverse products, thereby boosting the competitiveness of Korean firms.
