SK nexilis achieved ‘Zero Waste to Landfill’ Certification by UL for the first time in Korea’s secondary battery industry

  • SK nexilis’ Jeongeup plant has achieved Zero Waste to Landfill Gold
Operations, a 96% diversion rate, with 4% Thermal Processing with Energy
    Recovery.

  • SKC is planning to pursue the same certification
for its other business sites under its ambitious goals of ‘2030 Plastic Net Zero’
    and ‘2040 GHG Net Zero.’

SK nexilis, a
subsidiary of SKC (CEO Lee Wan-jae) in the copper foil business for secondary
batteries, has achieved the Zero Waste to Landfill (ZWTL) certification from
UL, a global safety standards certification body, for the first time in the
secondary battery industry in Korea. Starting with this certification, SKC is
pushing to achieve ZWTL certification for its other business sites as well.

SK nexilis’
Jeongeup plant has recently achieved the 'GOLD’ level of ZWTL certification from
UL, which certifies that more than 95% of the company’s total waste is being recycled.
‘Gold’ is second only to UL’s highest recognition the ‘Platinum (100%)’ level. SK
nexilis has continued making efforts to expand its resource circulation by not
only recycling scrap _ meta_l, wastepaper, and plastic waste, but also paying keen
attention to the by-products of 'used water' and the establishment of a
recycling system for copper in the by-products.

SK nexilis is the first
Korean company to receive the ZWTL certification in the domestic secondary
battery industry; only about twenty global companies, including SK hynix, Samsung
Electronics, and BASF, maintain the certification worldwide. The main reason for
this is that UL applies strict criteria to the waste recycling rate by
including the performance of all the business partners of a given company and
the recognition of resource recycling itself in the most _ string_ent way
possible.

Amid the explosive
growth of waste in recent years, the importance of earnest efforts to reduce
waste is increasingly being stressed. In Korea, the Korea Waste Association
under the Ministry of Environment has reported that Korea produced a whopping
497,238 tons of waste in 2019, as a result of an average annual growth rate of
5% over five years, including the incredible growth rate of 11% between 2018
and 2019.

As part of its
waste reduction initiatives, SK nexilis is planning to establish a
comprehensive recycling cooperation system that encompasses all its business
partners and customers, while seeking to achieve the ZWTL certification for its
overseas business sites. Meanwhile, SKC is continuing with its efforts to help
other subsidiaries to increase their recycling rate and acquire the UL
certification for their business sites, too. Companywide, SKC is striving to
expand waste recycling throughout all its business operations, including the
launch of a waste plastic pyrolysis oil project to extract oil from waste
plastics.

An executive of SKC
said, "SKC has declared 2021 as the first year of its ESG promotion and is
working hard to boost its waste recycling rate significantly as part of its
ambitious goals of 2030 Plastic
Net Zero and 2040 GHG Net Zero,” adding,
“Spurred on by the ZWTL
certification of SK nexilis, SKC will accelerate its efforts to minimize waste generation
and maximize waste recycling at its other business sites as well.”
