SKC, Completion of Polyimide Film plant
2006-07-20
SKC (CEO: Park Jang Suk) has completed the construction of a Polyimide (PI) film plant in Jincheon, Chungbeuk on July 20, 2006, at a total cost of 43 billion won. The plant has been operating at full capacity since its completion.
The market for polyimide film is growing at a rapid growth rate of 12% and depends on demand from the electronics and display industries. The mass production of PI film by SKC will lessen the domestic firms’ reliance on PI imports, and help SKC capture a larger share of the domestic PI film market.
SKC broke ground on the first PI film plant in April 2005 with the capability to produce 300 tons of PI annually, on a plot of 69 acres of land. The construction took 15 months to complete and a ceremony commemorating its completion was held on July 20, 2006. SKC is preparing to build a second plant that will have twice the production capacity of the first plant by late 2007, The second plant will cost less to build since the existing infrastructure and workforce of the first plant will be utilized. Through economies of scale, manufacturing costs will be lowered substantially and maintain the competitiveness of the company.
SKC will compete against the three leading global manufacturers of polyimide film - Du Pont, Kaneka, and Ube - by expanding its manufacturing capabilities and pursuing foreign markets. Polyester film and polyimide film will become core businesses of SKC Film division.
