Set to supply large volume of eco-friendly bio-disposable film to food giant

SKC (President Park Jang-seok) said on June 4 that it succeeded in mass production of bio-disposable film for food packaging for the first time in the world, and began its supply to the U.S. company PepsiCo after completing the development of a bio-disposable film for the first time in Korea in 2005, and launching the development of a bio-disposable film for food packaging in 2007. The bio-disposable film, being supplied to PepsiCo, is used in packaging for snacks, including the Sun Chips brand of PepsiCo’s Frito Lay, which accounts for 40 percent of the global snack market.

SKC steps up eco-friendly business

SKC President Park Jang-seok said, “As we have begun supplying bio-disposable film to the world’s largest food and beverage company, we have re ed our leadership in the food packaging film segment, and we will further step up our efforts to develop new eco-friendly materials.”

An SKC official said, “With the advent of a low-carbon, green growth era, we anticipated demand for bio-disposable film would surge in Korea and abroad, and hence constructed mass production lines for the product in our Suwon plant. The company will also construct production lines at our Georgia plant in the U.S. by year’s end, as we aim to step up our drive to expand markets.”

Current situation of bio-disposable industry

Bio-disposable film is made of resin extracted from plants. When buried after use, the material is biologically dissolved 100 percent in a short period of time, and converts into soil. Amid the environmentally focused industrial trends, global food makers have developed a keen interest in bio-disposable film, and thus new applications for the product are being developed continuously. As such, market demand for the film is expected to expand 40-fold from 2,000 tons this year to 80,000 tons in 2013 in the U.S. alone.

SKC wins ‘innovative supplier of the year award’ from Frito Lay

Frito Lay (PepsiCo’s food business unit) selected SKC as the winner of the “innovative supplier of the year award” in recognition of the Korean firm’s strong capacity as demonstrated in the process of bio-disposable film development and supply. Frito Lay selects the “supplier of the year award” every year. But it picks the winner of the “innovative supplier of the year award,” only when there is a contractor that notches creative innovation in compliance with Frito Lay’s strict criteria. The food giant honored SKC because SKC successfully developed a bio-disposable film for food packaging, and began its mass production to allow Frito Lay to use the film for the first time in the world, helping stabilize the supply of the product. Previously, the supply of bio-disposable film was not stable because it was difficult to develop production technology, and thus only a few companies were producing it in small quantities.
