SKC Haas renamed “SKC hi-tech & marketing”

● Going beyond display products, the portfolio will be expanded to automobiles and semiconductor parts as it strives to emerge as the first mover

● The company plans to invest over 100 billion won in Korea and China over the next five years, targeting sales of 1 trillion won and operating profit of 150 billion won in five years

SKC Haas Display Film, Korea’s No. 1 film-processing company, changed its company name to SKC hi-tech & marketing in July and got a fresh start as a subsidiary of the SKC Group.

The company was renamed SKC hi-tech & marketing on July 1, 2017 (Lee Tae-hwa , CEO) after SKC (Lee Wan-jae, CEO) completed the acquisition of a 51% stake in the Dow Chemical Company of the US and SKC Haas Display Film. The new name, which indicates the vision of becoming a customer-oriented, technology-centered company that _ create_s a new market,” is in line with SKC’s new vision of “Global Specialty MARKETER.” SKC’s new vision expresses the company’s determination to grow into a global company with technologically superior products that can meet the changing demands of today’s fast-evolving market.

SKC hi-tech & marketing, Korea’s Technology Leader, Creates Added Value for SKC’s Hi-Tech Films ··· Expanding into the new materials business

Going forward, SKC hi-tech & marketing plans to broaden its business portfolio and produce processed materials for electric vehicles and semiconductors as well as convergence products using IT and displays by using its advanced technology in processing SKC’s hi-tech films. To this end, the company will invest over 100 billion won in R&D and facilities over the next five years in China and Korea. The company is targeting sales of 1 trillion won and operating profit of 150 billion won in five years.

First, the company will fast-track the commercialization of products that it has been developing in technological collaboration with SKC. Examples of these products under development include quantum dot (QD) film, a key material for quantum dot TV, and a composite film that can make thinner and cheaper LCD displays. QD film makes TV colors more vivid by changing green LED light into the three primary colors. The company is working closely with SKC to commercialize the film by the second half of the year.

A composite film is the combination of diffusion film, prism film, and reflective polarizer film that are included in the back light unit (BLU) of LCD display. The film does not only make the display thinner but also shortens the production process, resulting in cost reduction and brightening the sales outlook. SKC hi-tech & marketing, in cooperation with SKC, is planning to launch the composite film in the near future.

In partnership with SKC, SKC hi-tech & marketing will launch projects to develop new products. The company is determined to _ create_ the world’s No. 1 products by taking advantage of SKC’s films, chemical materials, and inorganic materials as well as the combined R&D capacity of the two companies.

For example, the two companies can work together on the commercialization of transparent PI film that SKC is developing. When SKC’s transparent PI film-manufacturing technology meets the hard coating technology of SKC hi-tech & marketing, the two companies can respond to customers’ demands in a timelier manner. Transparent PI film is a popular new material that can replace glass in next-generation displays including foldable smart phones. The two companies are expected to realize highly synergistic effects in the development of film materials that are used in the production of OLED displays whose demand is growing.

In particular, the partnership with SKC makes it possible for SKC hi-tech & marketing to tap into new areas that it had previously found difficult to access. The company plans to add processed materials for electric vehicles, semiconductors, and batteries to its portfolio; thus maximizing synergy and diversifying its display-focused business portfolio.

A package production system combining film manufacturing and processing has been established ··· The voice of customer can be reflected faster, and the company intends to be the first mover

In the long term, the two companies will strive to maximize their strengths so as to offer products that the customers and the market need. If SKC hi-tech & marketing listens closely to the voice and demands of customers and constantly interacts with SKC throughout the supply flow from “film manufacturing and processing to customers,” the company can realize the development of film materials optimized for the needs of customers. Customer satisfaction can be further increased when film manufacturing and processing are optimized to meet the needs of the customers and the market.

“Our processing business was previously focused on display materials, but we will expand and diversify the processing business as our key growth engine by taking advantage of SKC’s materials technologies. We will provide total solutions to our customers as the first mover that changes the industry landscape, reaching our targets of 1 trillion won in sales and 150 billion won in operating profit in five years,” a spokesperson of SKC hi-tech & marketing said.

SKC hi-tech & marketing is a joint venture set up in 2007 by SKC, which owns a 49% stake, and Rohm and Haas, a US chemical company with a 51% stake. On March 17, SKC agreed to take over the entire 51% stake of the Dow Chemical Company in the joint venture, subsequently embarking on the takeover process. Currently, the company is operating production centers in Cheonan, Korea and Shuzhou, China with a 64% share in the world shatter-proof film market. It is globally recognized for its superior technology as the world’s No. 1 optical OCA film manufacturer.

Major products include ▲shatter-proof film that prevents glass from shattering and flying around when broken and enhances the design, ▲silicon release film used in the processing of optically clear adhesive (OCA), ▲mill_ base_, a raw material for LCD/OLED color filter, and ▲dispersion film and reflective film included in the back light unit (BLU) of LCD displays. The company posted 277.8 billion won in sales and 13.3 billion won in operating profit in 2016. [End]
