SKC (CEO Park Jang-seok) announced on March 17 that its board of directors meeting had decided that the company would add three production lines for EVA sheets at the SKC Jincheon Plant by investing 44.5 billion won. The new lines will have a combined annual production capacity of 18,000 tons, and will start mass production in the first half of next year. Since the company will inaugurate one line at its Suwon plant late this month, it will secure a collective annual production capacity of 24,000 tons by 2011.
EVA (ethylene vinyl acetate) is a material (sealing material) that is used in solar cell modules. Within the solar cell battery, it seals and fills the cell, while boasting superior strength, transparency, and insulation capacity, among other characteristics.
Aims to attain 300 billion won in annual EVA sheet sales, take up 25% share of global market in 2015
In a bid to become a top-rated global enterprise in the solar cell materials industry, SKC plans to add six production lines capable of churning out an additional 36,000 tons at its global production hubs, including the U.S., by 2014. By so doing, the company aims to secure the capacity to produce a total of 60,000 tons of EVA sheets per annum, as well as posting 300 billion won in sales and controlling a 25-percent share of the global market in 2015.
SKC President Park Jang-seok said, “Since the solar cell industry is expected to see robust growth, expanding over 30 percent per year, the company must aggressively push to expand the business,” adding, “As the company has already established a back sheet joint venture with Keiwa, a specialized producer of back sheets for solar cells in Japan, we will grow to become a leading enterprise focusing on solar cell materials production, posting annual sales of more than 500 billion won in the solar cell materials field alone in 2015.

Completes vertical integration of solar cell materials production

SKC is already mass-producing polyester and fluoride film, in addition to EVA sheets for solar cells. Through its subsidiary SKC Solmics, the company plans to start production of silicon wafer products amounting to 50 MW within the year, as well as back sheets, thus becoming the only company in the world that collectively produces essential materials for solar cells. Through the integrated system for solar cell materials production, SKC plans to provide total solutions to customers, and hopes to contribute to boosting the competitiveness of the Korean solar cell industry.
